Six Fraternal World Predictions for 2013

A number of other professions create “predictions” or up and coming “trends” for the upcoming year. Unless I missed them, I noticed that the fraternal world does not. In most circumstances, these predictions are nothing more than an educated guess. Yet, every now and then one hits the nail on the head. I figured why not make some predictions for the fraternal world. Who knows maybe one will hit the nail on the head! So with that being said, here are my six bold predictions for 2013:

Service Becomes THE Thing To Do
In 2013, we will see a record number of service hours completed by Greek organizations. Students will embrace the dirt and sweat of doing community service and start to do it on a more frequent basis. “Forget the once a month service event, let’s do it once a week” said the upbeat, newly elected Community Service Chair. Partnerships with local agencies and National service trips will lead the way in this awesome initiative.

A Record Hazing Lawsuit Will Occur
Each year, there are positive predictions and some that are not so pleasant predictions. This prediction unfortunately fits the latter. With the lack of patience from University administrators, National Headquarters, parents and alumni, 2013 will be the year where a record hazing lawsuit will occur. “Enough is enough” will be the headlines from the lead attorney of the family who loses a child due to reckless, immature and illegal hazing. $150-200 million is the number that pops in my head.

Larger Staffs on Campus and at National Headquarters
“We need more support. We need more bodies. We need more money” shouts the Executive Director and Director of Greek Life respectively. Surprisingly, National Headquarter Foundations and University Administrators finally agree with this sentiment. In return, we see a growth of Risk Reduction, Digital/Social Media and Expansion/Extension National staff support. One might argue a need for more Associate/Assistant Exec. Director positions as well.

On the campus side, we will see more Coordinator and Assistant Director positions’ open up. At the very least, more graduate assistantships will become available to help fill a much needed void in student to staff ratio.

Greater Digital Presence from National Headquarters
Social Media is here to stay and with that will become a need to reach students via various social media platforms. This will result in National Headquarter staffs hiring more Social Media Community Managers/Strategist/Specialist. Facebook engagements will increase. Twitter chats will become a weekly thing. Pinterest parties will be the new “it” social. Organizations who embrace LinkedIn will see a tremendous growth in alumni networking and help recent graduates find a job. Most of all, blogging from the National Headquarter staff perspective will become a great way for their undergraduate students to see the “behind the scenes” stuff. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more webinars, podcasts and SlideSharing occurring to engage more undergraduate members, volunteers and alumni.

A Campus Will Close Their Greek Community
Dartmouth had such a brutal year in 2012 that I’m sure people considered the option of closing their Greek community. Trinity College is forcing Greek organizations to go co-ed or risk their existence on campus. These are just two examples of Greek communities on thin ice. They aren’t the only campuses under the microscope. I predict there will be one campus with two different large scale risk management issues that push the Board of Trustees to close their Greek community. Students will be outraged but in the end, their own lack of accountability will be the demise of the community they loved.

A New, Disruptive Program Will Be a Game Changer
In the business world, being disruptive is embraced. It is a development/program/philosophy that disrupts the status quo and allows for a positive shift in the game. Remember when that thing called the “iPhone” came out. Yeah, that was a game changer. That website called “Facebook” – another game changer.

In the fraternal world, game changers come every 4-5 years it seems. I’d love to see more game changing and I think 2013 brings a game changer to the fraternal world. My gut says that it will be in the philanthropy/service arena but realistically, I think it will come in the risk management arena. Ritual education is the golden egg waiting to be found and used as a game changer. Bystander behavior had its moment but has fizzled out a bit. A disruptive academic program would be awesome as would a real challenge in recruiting in the sorority and multi-cultural environments. Regardless, there will be a disruption in the fraternal world and it will be a game changer. The question is who will create it?

Those are my six predictions. What predictions do you have for the fraternal world?

2012: Worst Year Ever for Greek Organizations?

Was 2012 the worst year for fraternities and sororities? I had some time to reflect over the holidays and I couldn't help but think of all the negative press Greek organizations received in the past year. I asked myself, “is it just because the internet makes it easier to track these issues?” Then, I stopped myself and realized, “does that matter?”

In my time as a campus-based professional, I can’t remember a year that was worse for negative publicity centered on fraternities and sororities. Thus, I present 51 reasons why 2012 may have been the worst year ever for fraternities and sororities:

What is alarming is that these are the articles I saved. I know there are more that I missed or didn't save simply because I didn't want to read any more negative news. Another alarming reality. I didn't post any negative pictures. Social media has really challenged our fraternal members to make good choices and unfortunately, some are not making the best decisions. So, as we begin 2013, let us remember that we have work to do. Let us also remember to learn from these mistakes.

AFA Bylaw Change

After an engaging Twitter chat on Wednesday, December 5th, I wanted to provide a space for individuals to understand the differing viewpoints pertaining to the AFA Bylaw change. I have broken it down into sections to hopefully make the Bylaw change easy to understand. I invite anyone to write in the comment section if you have anything further to add.

The Background:

Before we get to the actual proposed change, it is important to understand what the current AFA Bylaws state. See the current Bylaws here: BYLAWS Specifically, Article III which articulates Membership in AFA. As you will read, only three (3) of the five (5) current membership classes are eligible to hold appointed or elected positions. This is important when the discussion of inclusion is brought up but we will get to that later.

I think it is also important to highlight that the current (outgoing) board has six (6) individuals who serve in a campus-based professional capacity and one individual who serves in a Headquarter staff capacity. The incoming board will have six (6) individuals who serve in a campus-based professional and one individual who serves in a Headquarters staff capacity.

The Proposed Change:

Now, onto the current, proposed Bylaw change. The petition proposes to change the following Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA) Bylaw by removing the stipulation that only campus-based Professional, Graduate or Emeritus members shall serve as President of the Association.

Current Bylaw: Article V, B, 1:
Each officer shall be a Professional, Graduate or Emeritus member during his or her term of office. The President-Elect and President shall be employed or enrolled in a graduate program at a college or university during their terms of office.

Proposed Bylaw: Article V, B, 1:
Each officer shall be a Professional, Graduate or Emeritus member during his or her term of office.

The PURPOSE of the change was to create equality among those within a single membership category.

The Differing Viewpoints:

Those in FAVOR:
Individuals who are voting in FAVOR of the proposed change believe that the leaders of AFA, regardless of position, should not be limited to campus-based professionals. As one person wrote in the Twitter chat, “It’s about qualified candidates being able to run and the membership being able to choose who they want to elect regardless of where they work.” It is also important to re-read the purpose of this change above, “within a single membership category.”

Those who OPPOSE:
Individuals who are NOT in favor of the proposed change believe that if the Bylaw is highlighting inclusion, why not allow ALL members to be able to run for President. As one person in the Twitter chat wrote, “I remain opposed because I want to guarantee that there is a voice for campus-based professionals among all the other umbrella groups.”

Vote Impact:

If the Vote Passes:
Individuals who do not work as a campus-based professional would be able to serve ANY leadership position within AFA’s Executive Board, including President-Elect and President. However, concerns about the “voice” of the Association and possible lawsuits that create conflicting interests were brought up in the Twitter chat.

If the Vote Does Not Pass:
If the proposed change is voted down, two issues would be evident. First, in the Bylaws, we would have same membership categories but different benefits. Second, individuals who currently serve on the Executive Board would not be allowed to ever serve in the capacity of President-Elect and President. As one Twitter chat individual wrote, “Not passing this clearly delineates that the Association does not view all professional members as equal partners in working with issues.”

The Gray Area:
In following the Twitter chat, there were two issues that became very apparent – inclusion and the Nominations and Elections Committee (NEC).

To address the inclusion piece, if you want ALL membership classifications to be equal, that would require a Bylaw change that is currently not part of the current proposed Bylaw change. Specifically, Affiliate and Vendor membership classifications would need to be revised to state that those members would, “Be able to hold appointed AND elected position.” Another point to consider is that if this proposal is voted down, are we being inclusive of who can hold the highest leadership position(s) in our Association?

Moving forward, if you have an issue with inclusion, you would either need to contact the person who proposed the Bylaw change and ask them to rescind the proposed change and create a new proposal OR you would simply vote no on the proposal. I guess you could also vote yes and then ask to revise or edit the current, proposed change.

To address the NEC concerns, I feel that is a chat for another day. However, in my opinion, I think people are frustrated with the NEC process. Specifically, there are candidates that are running un-opposed to leadership positions and voting members are asking why. I don’t think it’s so much the vetting process, but moreover, voting members want to see their options. Sure, there may be a “best” candidate but what about the other eligible candidates? As one individual in the Twitter chat wrote, “Transparency is the key to success of the NEC, boosting confidence in the process from stakeholders.”

Conclusion:
In closing, this is my interpretation of what I’ve heard both at the Annual Meeting as well as the Twitter Chat. If I inaccurately portrayed a viewpoint, leave a comment below. I think it is also important to state that if this proposed change passes, doesn’t mean someone other than a campus-based professional will ever serve as the President-Elect or President, it just allows them the opportunity for them to serve in that capacity. It removes a barrier and puts the decision in the hands of the NEC and membership.

As far as the future of the Association, if you have questions, ask. If you want to have a conversation, create a setting. Challenge the leadership. We preach the mentality of “not being a bystander” so don’t be one. I personally felt like I wanted to hear more about this conversation which is why the Twitter chat was created.

I hope this helps.

Social Media Roulette

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, FourSquare – these are just four of the social media platforms that have transcended how we communicate with one another today. I’m a huge advocate for social media and the impact it can have on our society. As I type this, we are faced with the unique storm #Sandy and because of social media outlets, we are able to get up-to-the-minute news updates, images and reports on the damages #Sandy is having in the Northeast. Social media, when done right, can drive engagement and positive interaction that will in turn increase one’s desire to return to your Facebook page, Twitter account, etc.

Yet, with the rise of social media has also come the need for greater education and understanding. To help, I am writing this blog entry in the hopes that it will make you think twice before playing social media roulette.

What is roulette one may ask? Roulette is a game of hit or miss. In a gambling sense, it is whether the ball lands on black or red. In the context of social media, it is whether you post something and regret it or you don’t. My hopes are that you learn to use critical thinking before posting that next “wall status” or tweet.

To simplify this conversation, I thought it would help to break it down into some categories that my blog readers fall into and provide some tips to ensure you use social media platforms correctly and wisely:

To the Chapters of Fraternities and Sororities:
·         You represent a brand (i.e. your National organization) - Remember that in everything you post or tweet or take a picture of on occasion.
·         Don’t mistake activity with achievement – Just because your chapter puts a lot of content on Facebook doesn’t mean it is good content. Keep to your mission, vision and core values but showcase your chapter’s personality in a unique but appropriate way.
·         Social Media does not replace person-to-person recruitment - Don’t think your Instagram and Pinterest accounts are going to do the recruiting for you. Social Media starts the conversation, it doesn’t complete it.

To the Fraternity and Sorority Individual Member:
·         Think Before You Post/Tweet - You can delete Facebook posts but you CANNOT delete a tweet. Once you hit “tweet,” you can never go back. Numerous individuals have regretted not thinking before tweeting. In addition, why create a passive-aggressive FB wall post about your roommate for not cleaning up her side of the apt. when you could easily just talk to her about it?
·         Accountability, Accountability, Accountability – Ask yourself, would your grandparents want to look at your Facebook pictures? Think for a moment, if your chapter meeting is at 7pm and you are not present but then people see you “check-in” at a local bar at 7:02pm that could be an issue. If you are underage and drinking and someone tags you in a photo, that could be an issue. Same goes for the Exec. Board member who despises breaking risk management policy but yet posts their explicit breaking of policy for the world to see.
·         Check Yo’Self before you Wreck Yo’Self – Some of you may not understand the reference but the point is, do a personal search on yourself. If I type your name in Google, what will come up? If I search your Twitter handle, what will I see? Did you know I can see your “Favorites” on Twitter? What kind of images are you tagged in on Facebook? Are you on YouTube and proud of it? Where have you been checking into these days on FourSquare?

To the Upcoming Graduate: (Source: http://mashable.com/2012/09/01/social-profiles-job/)
·         92% - That is the most recent percentage of companies who use LinkedIn, Facebook and/or Twitter for recruiting. 73% have found a new hire through a social network.
·         Negativity Hurts – Reference to drugs, posts/tweets of sexual nature, profanity, grammar errors and pictures of alcohol, in that order, are what recruiters react most negatively to.
·         Expect the Unexpected – 86% of recruiters’ review candidates’ social network profiles – whether or not candidates share those links. If you make it to a face-to-face interview round, be ready to answer a question or two about your social media outlets.

To the Fellow Professional:
·         Separate Personal from Professional – If you are the manager of your work’s social media accounts, ensure you keep your posts strictly to work. People have lost their jobs for mistaken posts/tweets that didn’t have ill intentions but resulted in too much damage.
·         Be Careful with Account Management – Some professionals like to give students free rein on social media accounts but if a student posts/tweets something inappropriate, do you have a social media crisis plan? Ensure what is being posted on official University accounts are something you are prepared to defend to your boss.
·         Hold Students Accountable – Did you know about that inappropriate Instagram picture your multicultural organization posted? What about that unclassy Pinterest board regarding “fratty costumes” for Halloween? Hearing through the rumor mill about a disturbing hashtag? These are all examples of where you as the professional need to step in and address the matter accordingly. What you don’t confront, you condone.

As I stated above, when done right social media can elevate the presence of an organization, drive engagement and really create a movement for a campus, a chapter or a National organization. So, make sure you are using social media correctly and for my professional friends, you are using social media as a learning experience for the students. The social media world moves fast and we need to keep on top of it with our education and knowledge.

Hazing: Changing your Perspective

The Challenge:
Before you read my entry below, I’d like you to perform one of the following exercises:

-Write the following statement with your NON-dominate writing hand - “I want to end hazing and educate others on the dangers of physically, psychologically or emotionally harming someone.” Now, write it with your dominate writing hand. Until they match perfectly and look identical, keep performing the task.

-For the next week, I want you to change how you get ready in the morning. I want you to get up early or later than usual. I want you to put your body wash on first before you shampoo your hair. I want you to show up 20 minutes early to work every day.

Why do one of these activities? What is the purpose?
To me, this is the challenge we face in ending hazing. We believe that a learned behavior can be changed in a day. We believe that knowledge alone will change the behavior. Yet, we fail to understand that someone that hazes has probably been brought into a culture where hazing is the norm. Where hazing is what is to be expected and that the harmful behavior has been engrained for an extended period of time. Too often, we assume that when we have identified a hazer or a hazing culture, it can be eradicated quickly.

Referring back to the examples above, is it reasonable for me to believe you can perform either of these tasks well on the first try? The second try? After a few days? Most of you would probably say no, so why should that be different for a person/organization that has been identified as a hazer or hazing chapter?

Don’t Mistake My Point with My Belief That Hazing is Wrong:
My point is this – effective hazing prevention is a process, not a program. It is multiple, continuous conversations over time and not a one-time discussion. It is really trying to understand the hazer’s point of view and perspective. Did they really want to harm someone? Were they susceptible to peer pressure? Were they fearful of being ostracized by their peers because they didn’t go along with the hazing culture? We need to do a better job of understanding the reasoning behind the behavior rather than just stopping the behavior. We need to raise more awareness and create environments where accountability is promoted, not looked at as snitch or tattle-tail.

I don’t support, condone or endorse hazing. It is illegal in 44 states. It is harmful, stupid and for narrow-minded people who believe physically, psychologically or emotionally harming someone is beneficial to our society. Simply put, I despise anyone that endorses hazing behavior.

The Science:

Another aspect that is often neglected when we talk about hazing is the science behind the behavior. Take these 3 pieces of information as an example:
-61% of males, 52% of females experience hazing in college (Allan & Madden, 2008)

- And they perceive a social crisis as a threat to their very existence because, on a neural level, “our brains react to peer exclusion much as they respond to threats to physical health or food supply.” (National Geographic article Teenage Brains)
-Psychologists believe the human mind has two systems for decision-making: intuitive and reasoning. The intuitive system is emotional, fast, automatic but slow-learning, while the reasoning system is emotionally-neutral, slow, controlled, and rule-governed. Neither, of course, is always right, but there are certain simple problems that reveal flaws in intuition.

A classic example that Kahneman has often used in lectures is this math problem: A bat and a ball together cost $1.10. The bat costs a dollar more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

Your intuitive system may quickly tell you that the ball costs 10 cents. That would be an easy solution, but it would also be incorrect. In fact, if the ball costs 10 cents, that would mean the bat costs $1.10, so the two together would be $1.20 -- violating the first piece of information you had. A little algebra, or a little more thought, reveals that the ball must have cost 5 cents. Oops. (CNN article)

If you are like me, these 3 statements and information fascinate you. Why are more males than females experiencing hazing based on the study of Allan & Madden? How should we interpret the information provided in the National Geographic article Teenage Brains when it comes to students feeling neglected by their peers or facing a social crisis? Finally, what should we make of the CNN article and how the human mind processes decision-making with two different systems? How many of you failed to get the ball cost correctly?

We need more scientific data on hazing behavior. We can measure how alcohol affects the brain and decision-making but we haven’t been able to do the same. The Allen & Madden study is a start but now we must ask, “now what.” These are the conversations that should be had at National Headquarters meetings. At AFA, AFLV, SEIFC, SEPC, etc. These conversations should be occurring on college campuses nationwide. It’s not enough to highlight the statistics, we need to process the statistics and build our prevention methods off of this information.

Conclusion:

National Hazing Prevention Week begins on Sept. 24th and now is the time to open up your doors, get people to the table and start having genuine, real conversations. We must learn to create prevention activities that are designed to increase learning and change behavior. If the behavior doesn’t change, the activities are ineffective.

Finally, we need to take a step back and look at hazing from the hazer’s perspective. Yes, it may get ugly and yes, we may never understand their rationale but we as professionals, volunteers and fellow individuals, must do so because it is necessary. Necessary so that we can never read another hazing tragedy again.
